Romance and Memories on a Budget

Your wedding colors set the mood from classic affairs to off-beat celebrations. The wedding color scheme is usually one of the bride's early choices, because everything else builds on color. You can achieve the desired effect by choosing one important base color, usually the color of the bridesmaid dresses. After that, add one, two or three more colors to create the desired effect .

The wedding color scheme you choose will set the mood for your wedding. Most brides want help choosing their wedding colors. You can find your wedding color scheme all around you. Look at your clothes in the closet. Look at the colors in your home. Maybe the colors of furniture, floors and walls at the wedding venue will guide you to a complementary color scheme. The colors of the season, the colors of flowers in bloom, and the colors of ripe fruit will also set you thinking. Have you considered as wedding colors the birthstone colors of you and your loved one? For a traditional touch, you might choose the same colors your parents used. Look at the colors of a Mexican serape, an Indian scarf, a favorite painting or a print skirt to find your own colors.

Better yet, if you want to keep the budget under control, don't choose your wedding colors until you go shopping for the bridesmaids dresses. When you find off-the-rack dresses that everyone likes, let the available colors for the dresses determine your color palette. It is much easier than trying to find a dress in an unusual color you've set your heart on. You'll have a color that looks good on the bridesmaids, too.

Brides often choose greens and white, lilac and white, and black and white for basic wedding colors. What's interesting is the current popularity of bright colors like orange, fuchsia, chartreuse, and turquoise. A bold splash of color adds excitement to your wedding affair. The bright colors work well in a tropical theme wedding, too. Wedding dresses don't have to be white, and before Queen Victoria set the fashion by wearing a white wedding dress, they used to be any color of the rainbow. The red wedding dress, in silk or velvet is a glamorous choice. But white is the sentimental favorite by far for bridal dresses.

You may already have a favorite color that you want to use, and need additional complimentary colors or contrasting colors. Using the dominant color in the bridesmaids dresses, pick accent colors that go with it. For accent colors, look at the flowers you like and what colors they come in.

A monochromatic wedding color scheme is a group of similar colors, like lavender, grape, lilac and similar shades. You could also choose pale yellow, sun yellow and goldenrod. A blend of similar colors with lots of pastels sets a soft, romantic mood.

The other side of the coin is a wedding color scheme of contrasting colors. A contrasting scheme uses colors that are opposites, like purple with yellow, or red with green, or orange with blue. These color combinations radiate energy and enthusiasm. Imagine a bowl of purple hyacinths in a circle of yellow ranunculus. Think about a red and green plaid tablecloth. Arrange glasses of orange mimosas on a cobalt blue tray. Yes, the strong, bright colors are beautiful together.

There are many places to use color in your wedding plans. The dresses, the flowers, hairpieces, the men's vests and ties, the aisle runner, the seat or pew decorations, the invitations and other wedding papers, table runners, chair covers and cushions, ribbons, candles, accessories, gifts, favors, stage decorations, cake, special drinks, menu, tableware, and transportation can carry out your wedding colors.

Here are a few wedding color schemes to get your started.
  • A blue and brown, using aqua blue, or pastel blue or Tiffany blue, combined with warm chocolate brown. If you need an additional color, try light beige. Tiffany blue, paired with light aqua blue is calming and refreshing. It brings a bright modern look. Touches of chocolate brown and maroon will provide a strong contrast to the blues. Go with bouquets of chocolate roses, and sashes of maroon on blue gowns. For the men in the wedding party, vests and ties of Tiffany blue or maroon will pull in the wedding colors. The gifts and favors could be in aqua blue boxes. Blue cosmopolitans are the beverage of choice with this color scheme. I can see these colors used for a beach wedding or a wedding near water, too.
  • Wedding colors of red and pink do work well together. It's easy to find inexpensive flowers, dresses and decorations in red and pink, and yet this color combo is unique, and has not been overdone.
  • Try a group of similar pastel colors, like shades of blues, with dark green to hold them together. You can also work with shades of pinks, or shades of yellows, again with dark green to hold the colors together.
  • Think pink, pink with navy, or pink with brown, or pink with dark green. Combine shades of pink with a light mauve for additional depth to the wedding color scheme. Every bridesmaid looks pretty in pink.
  • Red and yellow or red and orange is a spirited color scheme that tends to warm things up. Again, it's easy to find lots of inexpensive flowers in these colors. Bright colors will add spirit to the reception, too.
  • Yellow, green and white are casual and friendly colors together. They bring to mind daisies, Queen Anne's lace and other field flowers nestled in a bouquet with a few yellow roses. If you want the bridesmaids to wear yellow gowns, choose a yellow that goes with their natural skin tones. Some yellows can made a bridesmaid look jaundiced.
  • Pastel shades of green and lavender are always lovely wedding colors. Add a bit of dark green or purple in the flowers for contrast and depth.
  • Bright orange is increasingly popular. I love it with lots of pale peach to moderate the vibrancy. If you want to stay with vivid hues, you can add a touch of fuchsia or chartreuse.
  • Think about a metallic color scheme, like red with gold, blue with silver, or green with copper. Imagine the sparkle and lustre as candlelight falls on silver chargers, gold paillettes on the tablecloth, or copper vases.
  • A white-on-white wedding color scheme can include white pearls, white ribbons, white tulle, crystal embellishments, and a white ice sculpture. White can actually be one of two colors, a white with yellow undertones, or a white with blue undertones. The two colors of white don't necessary go well together, so know which one you prefer.
You can find inspiration for your wedding color scheme from the seasons of the calendar. For a spring wedding color scheme, you could work with baby pink, rich cream, soft lilac, pale sky blue, mint green, and soft silver tones. If your wedding is in summer, any number of colors are available. When autumn comes, wedding planners almost always think of the colors of fall, claret red, copper, olive green, straw, burgundy and deep pink. The winter wedding is suitable for the colors of winter itself, winter white, silvery greys, and icicle blues. The jewel-toned colors are beautiful in a winter wedding, ruby red, emerald green, purple amethyst, topaz gold, and sapphire blue. Against a snowy background, the jewel tones are radiant.

One of these wedding color schemes will be perfect for your wedding and reception. Make wedding planning a happy, confident time with your true love at your side. You are on the road to a perfect wedding day. I enjoy being your online wedding planner. Thank you for letting me share your love and excitement.
