How to Write Your Own Wedding Vows

Your personal wedding vows will be a memory that lasts a lifetime. In troubled times you'll think of your vows, and the world will seem brighter. In happy times, you'll repeat your vows to each other with joy and renewed commitment.

When you write your own wedding vows, you express your love and your commitment. You pledge your life to another person. Loyalty, comradeship, ideals and hopes for the future can be part of your own wedding vows. By writing your own wedding vows, you create another bond with your loved one. Of course, you can add humor, memories, thanks, gratitude, and your deepest emotions. You can bare your soul to your dearest.

Before you write the final version of your wedding vows, sit down together and talk about the dream you have for your own individual lives and then talk about the dream you have for your marriage. Then repeat those ideas when you write your wedding vows. Make the wedding vows you write a roadmap and direction for your married life. Repeat your wedding vows often after you are married. They could be a part of each anniversary celebration.

Your wedding vows can be traditional, religious, or part of your ethnic heritage. But you can add to this, or move away from this, with the approval of your celebrant. The best vows reflect who you are. Are you a traditional couple? A religious couple? A light-hearted couple? A romantic couple? A down-to-earth couple? Your vows can reflect who you are.

Write your wedding vows from your own point of view, funny, poetic, literary, romantic or practical. Feel free to add your own ideas, loving words, funny promises and inside jokes. When you write your wedding vows, touch on four things.
  1. We are here today in love.
  2. The wonderful things about the other person.
  3. The promises you make to your loved one.
  4. The pledge of love.
Here are some wonderful examples of things to say. You can select your favorites and modify them to suit your situation. See also our article Examples of Modern Wedding Vows for more suggestions and examples of wedding vows.
