Wedding Traditions

Chuppah Wedding Canopy

The Chuppah is said to symbolize the home and life we will establish together. In this spirit, the four sides are open to indicate all are welcome to our homes and our lives.

Sheva Brachot, The Seven Wedding Blessings

The Sheva Brachot are seven nuptial blessings. The singing of the seven wedding blessings includes the blessing over wine, praise for God as the creator of the world, of man and of woman, a prayer for the restoration of Jerusalem, one for the happiness of the young couple and praise for the Creator of ten degrees of rejoicing: "joy and gladness, mirth and exultation, pleasure and delight, love, brotherhood, peace and friendship."

Ketuba

This is the Jewish marriage contract. it is one of th eoldest elements in a Jewish wedding. The Ketuba we sign today reflects our love for each other, commitment to each other, and our hopes fo rthe future including our home, family and life together.

Breaking of the Glass Breaking of the glass at the conclusion of the wedding is a well-known custom that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. Tradition says that the breaking of the glass recalls the destruction of the ancient Temple in Jerusalem. Another interpretation is that the breaking of the glass warns us that love, like glass, is fragile and must be protected. Immediately after the groom breaks the glass, which is wrapped in a napkin, everyone should shout, "Mazel tov!" Mazel tov, literally "good luck" is used to express congratulations.
